Religion - on my soapbox

I do wish people would realise that it's the looney-tunes interpreters of the many and various religious novels, and not the normal, sentient people born into said various religions that cause all religious-related misery in the world today. And don't give me that "to believe you have to have faith and to have faith you have to believe" guff. It just doesn't wash. Hard, scientific and provable evidence is the only thing that does it for me. Not imbecilic control freaks who never do the dirty work themselves, instead, brainwashing, often the vulnerable and the outcast, into accepting unachievable and unprovable rewards for carrying out maniacal deeds. It also provides the opportunity for blame culture to flourish at the expense of religion, c.f. Mr Hitler and his current incarnate, the Supreme Nutter of Iran as well as the likes of the inappropriately named white "supremacists" and the inbred trailer trash of the KKK who for some totally inexplicable reas...

First impressions count

They say you only get one chance to make a first impression. It is therefore very hard to keep a straight face when the first impression one gets of the "Friends of Jesus" who trumped-up at my door this morning were like the three wise men portrayed in Monty Python's "Life of Brian", only dressed in Primark's best. There was the immediate temptation to inquire if they were "friends" of Jesus in the biblical sense, that is, they went to the Nazareth High School for Boys with him and shared a deep hatred of the Romans, or whether it was just friends in a Facebooky sort of way. However, that one would have overshot the heads of the front two height-challenged people and hit the tall John Cleese lookalike firmly in the chest. I was also tempted to point out that the John Cleese lookalike should really obtain trackie bottoms that are a good two to three inches longer, thus lending a little extra gravitas to their appearance, seeing as he was wearing bla...

Scientology and others

With the high profile separation of Tom Cruise and his orange crate from Katie Holmes appearing all over the media, Scientology is once again back in the news. I have always said, each to their own with their beliefs, and whatever makes people happy, providing they leave me alone, I've no worries. However, a belief in little green men, thought up by a science fiction writer (L of the Ron Mother Hubbard) who openly said "the best way to make a million is to start a religion" and who himself disappeared off in a camper van around Western America in 1980, defies belief. The current chief executive of the business, a David Miscavige (puns on the "Miscavige of Justice" are no doubt rife) is also of the less-than-tall community. Rumour has it that the two of them often compare orange crates before standing up at one of their cult conventions to extoll the virtues of parting simpletons from their hard-earned cash. The money would be far better spent on the home...
